Planned Giving

What is a planned gift?

A planned gift results from a donor's careful consideration as to the purpose of the gift, the assets to be used, the gift's timing, its effect on income-tax planning, its effect on estate-tax planning, and its impact on the donor's family members and friends. A planned gift is best made with the counsel of one's key financial advisors (attorney, accountant, insurance professional, banker, financial planner, etc.). A planned gift is often a gift of assets.

What is the best planned gift for me?

Every situation is unique. What matters most is what the you wants to accomplish with the gift. In what way do you want to benefit the American Swedish Historical Museum? In what way do you want to have the biggest impact?

Once the purpose of the gift has been determined, then the practical aspects - the assets to be used, the financial benefits to be emphasized, the documentation of the gift's purposes - can be worked out with you and your advisors.

How can the ASHM help me?

The American Swedish Historical Museum is happy to help donors evaluate their giving options and consider their opportunities. Through information from the ASHM, we help you make efficient use of the counsel of your advisors.

The ASHM does all it can to assure that donors are properly thanked and recognized, in the present, for plans leading to future gifts.

Bequest Language

A planned gift can be as simple as adding the American Swedish Historical Museum to your will. To name the American Swedish Historical Museum in your will, you can include the following language:

I give to the American Swedish Historical Museum, the sum of $_____ (or, ____ percentage of my estate).

The full value of a bequest is deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and there is no limit to the size of a bequest.
