Straw craft has a long history in Sweden, Scandinavia, and northern Europe. Rooted in folk belief and the importance of the grain harvest in pre-industrial societies, the craft was in danger of being lost with the advent of industrialization. Thankfully, it has survived and continues to be rediscovered by new generations of practitioners.
Try your hand at making a straw “Sweetheart.” Wheat weaver and museum researcher Kirsten Hansen Gyllenhaal will lead you through the project step by step. Detailed videos of the weaving techniques and hand positions will give everyone a clear view of the process. No previous experience is necessary. Consider inviting a friend to join in the fun! $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers.
