All ASHM members are invited to this exclusive discussion group. This month, we get a behind-the-scenes peek at the history and restoration of the Soldyrkaren (Sun Worshiper) sculpture by Swedish Sculptor Ida Thoresen.
Ida Thoresen was an important and active female artist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This life-sized marble sculpture came to the museum in 1930, to be part of an exhibition featuring Thoresen’s work. It remained in the U.S. because it had been sold to a collector in Chicago. However, the buyer never paid for it, and Thoresen died in 1937. Her estate donated the sculpture to the museum in 1938. It was on display in the grand hall for some time, but eventually was moved into storage where it remained for decades. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the sculpture has now been professionally conserved and brought back onto full display with the museum’s outdoor arcade.
