100 Years of Culture & Community

ASHM is embarking on a transformational capital campaign to ensure its continued vitality and impact in forging cultural connection and community for generations to come. The Museum’s mission of welcoming everyone to explore cultural identity through the stories of Swedes and all Scandinavians drives the improvements made possible by this campaign: to make the museum more accessible, more visible, and better equipped to engage with core audiences and the diverse community in which it is situated.

Phase One Goals: Access, Connection, and Visibility

With changes planned both on the Park side and the more heavily trafficked Pattison Avenue side, we are investing in the Museum’s literal gateways — making it easier, safer, and more intuitive for people of all ages and abilities to find, enter, and enjoy our historic space.

On the FDR Park side, we will:

  • Construct a ramp to connect the indoor Museum space to the Terrace ensuring and a fuller experience for all visitors
  • Modify fencing and landscaping to create greater visual and physical connection with FDR Park, enhancing the feeling of openness and inviting foot traffic from park-goers

On the Pattison Avenue side, we will:

  • Construct a welcoming new entry plaza with:
    • A ramp entrance
    • A drive-up and drop-off area for families and groups
    • A nine-space parking area, including four ADA-compliant spaces
    • A dedicated loading zone to streamline event setup, exhibition installations, and vendor access
  • Install enhanced exterior lighting and directional signage to improve wayfinding and nighttime visibility
  • Reconfigure fencing to accommodate the expanded entry and reflect the Museum’s spirit of openness

These long-planned improvements will eliminate physical barriers and make it easier for everyone — including those using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers — to experience all the Museum has to offer.
