Across the Atlantic explores the trans-Atlantic journey of the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to sail to the United States. Traveling aboard a small sloop called the Restauration, the 1825 voyage took 98 days and tested the resolve of its passengers and crew from the onset.

Made in Belgium in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, this magnificently carved meerschaum pipe features an elegantly carved amber stem, and a grotesque bowl wrought in the shape of a grinning skull. Though not of Swedish make, the pipe is said to have been owned by Oscar II (1829-1907), King of Sweden and Norway around the turn of the twentieth century. It was donated to the museum in 1947.
Sweden is a leader when it comes to recycling. Less than 1% of household waste ends up at a landfill! This month toddlers will learn that they are never too young to start recycling by following the story of a little green monster in the book I Can Save the Earth by Alison Inches. Kids will learn how resources can be reused instead of thrown away by playing games and doing art with recycled materials. Toddler will even get to fill a recycled seed planter to take home.
The phenomenon of aurora borealis can be seen across many arctic countries and certainly lights up the sky in northern Sweden. Join us for Toddler Time as we read Roaring, Boring Alice by P.K. Merski, make colorful crafts, and do a color mixing science experiment!

ASHM has been voted the Best Museum in Philadelphia again this year! ASHM has won Best Museum in Metro Philadelphia's Philly Best contest for 2024, in addition to being voted Best Museum in the Philadelphia Inquirer's Philly Favorites 2024 contest.
The Museum previously won Best Museum in Metro Philly's Best in 2021.
