Weaving a New Chapter: The Material Lives of Swedish Immigrants tells the story of Swedish immigration to America through the objects they brought with them in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Sweden’s craft and textile history has been an intrinsic part of Swedish heritage and cultural identity at home and abroad. Swedish immigrants produced remarkable fiber arts for centuries and brought their knowledge of weaving, knitting, embroidery, lacemaking, and trade skills to their new homes.

ASHM Swedish & Finnish Language Classes

Learning a new language is a fun and exciting challenge. Whether you are brand new to Swedish or Finnish, have some experience, want to learn more, or are looking for conversation partners, there is a class option tailored to your level! Classes are held online via Zoom and offered during a 10-week fall and spring semester. 

- An optional in-person meet-and-greet event is scheduled at the Museum on Sunday, Sept. 18th, 1:30-2:30 pm.

Weaving A New Chapter: The Material Lives of Swedish Immigrants Exhibition Opening & Reception

Explore the stories and personal objects that were central to Swedish immigrants who left their lives in Sweden to forge new paths in America. In this exhibition, you’ll learn about the important things immigrants chose to bring with them to their new home, and how they transformed their new material culture in America into symbols of their Swedish heritage as a way to uphold their connections to the past. Gallery talks will be led by Curatorial Intern Olivia Grasso and ASHM Curator Christopher Malone at 4:30 pm and 5:15 pm.

Telge Glíma: Old Scandinavian Folk Games and Sports Demonstration

ASHM is partnering with Friends of FDR Park to host Telge Glíma! This group has traveled the world putting on displays of traditional physical games played by Scandinavians for centuries.

The free event will be held on the lawn next to the Gazebo near the Boat House in FDR Park from 2:00-3:30 pm. ASHM will be there with Viking artifacts to explore and a rune stone craft activity. The performance will be from 2:30-3:15 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Virtual “Art for All” Exhibition Talk with Cori Sherman North

The story of a democratic flourishing of arts and culture in the American Midwest really begins in Stockholm in the 1880s, when a group of radical young artists broke with the long-established Royal Academy of Fine Arts over issues of artistic freedom. These revolutionary artists formed the Artists League in 1886 to organize public exhibitions in Sweden and offer free instruction for anyone who desired to practice art.

Fleisher Art Memorial Landscape Painting Workshop at the American Swedish Historical Museum

In conjunction with the exhibition Art for All: The Swedish Experience in Mid-America on view at the American Swedish Historical Museum this fall, the Fleisher Art Memorial is offering a one-day immersive workshop that will explore the joys of landscape painting. The day will start with a guided tour of the galleries which will specifically focus on the vibrant landscape paintings in this exhibition. Gathering inspiration from these works, the rest of the day will be spent painting from the veranda of the museum with a stunning view of FDR park.
