It’s crucial to pick the right clothes to keep warm in winter. Join us as we read The Hat by Jan Brett and explore some of Sweden’s cold-weather clothing. Toddlers will have fun playing interactive games based on the animal characters from the book and learn about dressing for cold weather.

For more than 5,000 years, tattoos have helped document the history of humanity one painful mark at a time. Tattoo: Identity Through Ink tells the story of why people have adorned their bodies with tattoos, from practices in Indigenous cultures to sailors in the 19th century to motorcycle gangs in the 1960s, to athletes and celebrities today. The exhibition showcases the last 150 years of tattooing in America, from the sideshows in the early part of the 20th century to modern celebrity tattoos.
Join us for this fun-filled evening of live music, singing, and dancing queens! The Philly POPS in partnership with the American Swedish Historical Museum (ASHM) is hosting an ABBA After Dark sing-along. You can listen in or sing along as The Philly POPS plays a variety of ABBA’s iconic hits on the museum terrace. Come dressed in your best ABBA attire for a chance to win tickets to the POPS Rocks ABBA: Mamma Mia! And more… concert at the Kimmel Cultural Campus November 17, 20, and 21.
Museum members are invited to have their children participate in our annual Lucia performances on December 4th and 5th. The performances take place at 11 am and 2 pm. They are sure to have fun dressing up as tomtar, pepparkakor, folk dancers, star boys, as well as Lucia and her attendants while singing traditional Swedish Christmas songs. The weaving of rya rugs began in Scandinavia centuries ago, join us with the instructor, Melinda Byrd. In this virtual class held over Zoom, you will learn about rya using supplies and techniques that do not require a loom. During this workshop, you will create a 16” x 16” introductory rya project. You can choose your color scheme from 6 color combinations of vintage Lundgren Rya virgin wool yarn. pictured to the left. Instructions will be enclosed to orient you but you can look forward to our online class with additional tips and tricks as well as some simple design elements.
Get cozy at the ASHM with our special Museum & Glögg Tour! Join us for our general gallery tour and learn about Scandinavian holiday traditions. Then enjoy some glögg, Swedish pepparkaka and Danish aebleskiver. between the tours. We are offering two tour time slots at 4 pm and 6 pm. The glögg reception will be at 5 pm, either after or before your tour. $5 for members and $15 for non-members.

ASHM is happy to partner again with CraftNOW Create! ASHM will be sharing about recycling and sustainability in Sweden with our craft: Plarn Woven Bowls.
This year Smith Memorial Playground is hosting CraftNOW Create outside on their beautiful campus. Demonstrations and take-home kits will be set up on their wrap-around porch and immediately in front of the Playhouse. Most projects are ideal for elementary-aged students.
