Toddler Time: I Can Build Too!

This month at Toddler Time families will get to explore ASHM’s newest exhibit American by Craft: The Furniture of Olof Althin and see the amazing things that can be built from wood. We will read “Harvey the Carpenter” by Swedish children’s author Lars Klinting to get an introduction to basic tools. Children will play with toy tools and even make their own wooden picture frames to take home!

Toddler Time is free for members and $5 per non-member child. You can register below or pay at the door.

Plogging in FDR Park

Join us for our second Plogging in FDR Park! We are excited to partner with the FDR Park staff to help keep our park beautiful. Plogging is a Swedish craze in which you pick up trash while exercising. This event is free but please register below.

Shop From Home Evening

Ready to do some early Christmas shopping, but prefer to do it from home? Sign up for a 20-minute time slot and you will be assigned a personal shopping assistant who will contact you via video chat to help you make selections from the ASHM gift shop. New Sweden History Conference

This year’s conference topic is Bridging Many Worlds: Exploring Concepts of Changing Cultural Identities in the New Sweden Colony. The colonial Mid-Atlantic region was a mixture of Lenape, Susquehannock, Swedish, Finnish, English, and Dutch peoples. This theme invokes exploration of physical and sociopolitical environmental impacts on cultural practices. How did experiences of migration affect traditional customs and concepts of identity during this period, 1638- 1776?

Fika! The Art of the Swedish Coffee Ritual: Watercolors by Jan Padover

Fika is life! When people fika (fee-ka), they take a break, unwind, or just enjoy each other’s company. They share conversations over a delicious cup of coffee and eat customary Swedish or other favorite pastries. This September, the American Swedish Historical Museum is pleased to present an exhibition of original watercolors by Jan Padover featuring various desserts traditionally served during fika. Learn about Sweden’s long history with coffee and how these foods became a treasured pastime loved by people all over the world.

Finnish Language Class Begins

Whether you are brand new to Swedish or Finnish, have some experience and want to learn more, or you are looking for conversation partners, there is a class option tailored to your level.
