Summer is the perfect time to experience Scandinavian culture by trying new drinks with friends in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Each July, the American Swedish Historical Museum hosts SmörgåsBeer, which brings people together to experience local and international beers and enjoy Scandinavian food. This year COVID-19 has changed the way we can gather, but not what we enjoy.

Don't let the quarantine stop you from taking a field trip...a virtual field trip that is! Be sure to visit ASHM's facebook page on Tuesday to watch this month's Toddler Time. Families will learn about the process of turning sheep's wool into clothing and take a virtual field trip to Tamarack Farm for an up close look at Swedish Gotland heritage breed sheep!
If you're looking for a book to read in quarantine, we might have one for you! ASHM is hosting a Zoom Q/A with Hal Taylor, author and illustrator of 'Before Penn: An Illustrated History of The Delaware River Colonies", on Thursday, May 21st at 7pm. The book includes dozens of detailed illustrations of Swedish, Dutch, and English settlers, sailors, and soldiers here on the Delaware.
Join our Marketing Assistant Jennie Skynäs for a virtual fika in Swedish next Wednesday, May 27th at 2 pm. Prepare your favorite hot drink, perhaps even a sweet treat, and join us as we have an informal chat together in Swedish! All Swedish speakers, no matter what your proficiency level is, are invited to participate.

Join the ASHM for our first virtual Toddler Time program exploring traditional Swedish food from a child's perspective in our new exhibit New Nordic Cuisine. We will read the story Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka Go To Market by Maj Lindman and visit the exhibit. Experience Swedish food at home by following the recipe for Swedish pancakes with lingonberry jam. You can also learn how to make your own herb garden using recycled materials.

Seasonality, sustainability, and local ingredients are the cornerstones of New Nordic Cuisine. What ingredients are more local than those found in your backyard? Join us for a fall educational walk-and-talk on foraging around the Museum in FDR Park! This walk will be led by expert forager, Lynn Landes. Lynn is the founder of The Wild Foodies of Philly, a 4900+ member meetup, and publisher of Wildfoodies.org, an educational website on foraging around Philadelphia. The experience includes admission to the Museum.
In accordance with the January 4th City of Philadelphia COVID-19 revised restrictions ASHM galleries will reopen effective Friday, January 8th, 2021.
Our Gift Shop will remain open and is expanded into the Grand Hall so that we can accommodate shoppers in a socially distanced space. We are also happy to take gift shop orders over the phone for curbside pick-up.
